Mirror neurons were discovered in 1990, in the laboratory of Giacomo Rizzolatti, who was a neuroscientist at the University of Parma, Italy.
The researchers in his laboratory had been studying the brain activity of macaque monkeys. When the monkeys eat the peanuts left for them, due to a movement in their brain a bell would ring in the laboratory. One day in the laboratory, one of the scientists took a peanut and put in his mouth, while one of the monkeys was watching to him. At that moment the bell rang as if a monkey had eaten the peanut. From this they found that the monkey observing the scientist eating the peanut had the same movement in his brain as if he himself was eating it.
The last researches surprised the scientists. There are many mirror neurons systems in the human brain, which helps a person to understand the intent of others, the meaning and feelings of social behaviors. Dr. Rizolli says, We are exquisitely social creatures, Our survival depends on understanding the actions, intentions and emotions of others. Mirror Neurons allow us to catch the minds of others with direct simulation instead of logic. He continued, Mirror neurons allow us to grasp the minds of others not through conceptual reasoning but through direct simulation. (By feeling, not by thinking.)
